Had the privilige of working as a crew chief and flight mechanic on this fine aircraft while serving with Scatback (7th Air Force Flight Operations) at Tan Son Nhut AB in '71. We were a high priority courier and VIP transport. Then Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird flew on this aircraft when he visited Viet Nam in 1971. I was the ground crew chief at the time, later I was lucky enough to become a flight mechanic and flew mostly Scatback Charlie (scheduled night courier run to bases in Thailand) on 652 and the other T-39As assigned to our unit. Three of them passed the 10,000 hour mark while I was on board. We flew the legs off these birds and they were as dependable as the rains during the wet seasons. Elegantly simple and easy to maintain. If memory serves, we put 100 hours on one of them in a seven day period.
