During my tour of duty with VMA(AW)242 in Danang, RVN, a group of us flew back to Whidbey Island to pickup some brand new aircraft for our squadron. I left Whidbey as a B/N on board A6A #155687 on 7JUN69 and arrived at Danang on 13JUN69. Our route was Whidbey-Barbers Point-Johnsons Island-Wake-Aga na-Cubi-Danang. The Whidbey to Barbers Point leg was my longest flight in an A6A (6.0 in my logbook) and included an air-air refueling off a KA3 when we reached altitude. When we touched down at Barbers Point DIANE had us within 6 NM of our actual position (with no updates since takeoff) - pretty impressive at the time. I went on to fly 12 combat missions over RVN & Laos in this "bird" between 1JUL69 and 15JAN70.
