A-6E Intruder 155635, Code KC-08, was part of Marine All Weather Attack Training Squadron-202, VMAT(AW)-202, in 1981. On 16 Jun 1981, coming off an ID pass at Navy Dare Bombing Range, the right engine failed with fire indications. I diverted to Elizabeth City Coast Guard Base. It was discovered that the right engine blew two turbine blades out of the engine casing, impaling in the titanium keel. Sad to see the plane was eventually scrapped.
