I was on the USS American COD Crew 1980-1983 and 146043 was ours. Best job I ever had for the first year and I thought I was in heaven. Unfortunately the ship's AVGAS tanks had just been removed so the aircraft could no longer go on deployment with the ship. We were forced to leave "Miss A" behind with VRC-40 and the COD crew was broken up to work in AIMD during the 1981 deployment. On the next deployment (1982 - 1983) we were detached to VRC-40 and left behind. Good times and bad but will never forget the crazy characters that made it unforgetable.

During my service aboard USS America [CV-66] from 1977-80, this aircraft served as the ship's COD, and was named "Miss America". I believe that she served in that role for many years. While serving aboard USS Saratoga [CV-60] in the mid-80's, she was then assigned to VRC-40, and visited us several times when operating off CONUS. I visited DMA in the early 90's and noticed her there at that time. I'd like to see her in a museum someplace - is she still in shape to become a display aircraft?
