The Lockheed U-2 Dragon Lady, the well known high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft which has been in service since the 1950s, is undergoing a phased retirement by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) as part of a broader effort to modernize intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

The primary reasons given for retirement include:

High operational and maintenance costs: In common with many other U.S. military systems, the U-2 is an aging platform requiring an ever increasing level of support and other operational costs. Specialized pilot training, high-altitude pressure suits, and frequent overhauls (e.g., Programmed Depot Maintenance every seven years or 4,800 flight hours), which are resource-intensive.

Vulnerabilities in modern warfare: Although it has been effective for decades, the U-2 now struggles in a changing airspace against advanced air defenses, making it less suitable for peer conflicts compared to drones, satellites, or next-generation aircraft.

The transition to more advanced technologies: The USAF is shifting towards fifth- and sixth-generation platforms, unmanned systems and space-based assets for ISR missions. Currently the U-2 is being used in the interim to test and integrate these technologies.


The full U-2S fleet retirement is slated for fiscal year 2026 (which runs from October 2025 to September 2026), but Congress has intervened to slow the process. In the FY2026 Defense Appropriations Bill, lawmakers prohibited the divestment of more than eight U-2s, allocating $55 million for ongoing maintenance to extend the program's life potentially into FY2027.

This follows previous congressional reprieves that delayed earlier retirement plans. Retired U-2s are being sent to AMARG for Type 1000 long-term storage. The first two 80-1066 and 80-1085 arrived at the base during January 2026.

Type 1000 storage means that the aircraft are preserved with protective coatings, regular inspections, and minimal disassembly, allowing for potential reactivation if needed (e.g., in emergencies or for parts cannibalization). To allow the overland transport of these large aircraft, they are partially dismantled with their wings and being tail seperated at their point of origin.

It is reported that at least three more are scheduled for retirement soon (including 80-1065, which is a TU-2S two-cockpit trainer, and 80-1073 and 80-1083 which are part way through their overhaul), and up to four additional by the end of the year. The remaining fleet of arouund 30 aircraft (which includes the ones operated by NASA) continues operations from Beale AFB in California, focusing on missions and training until the complete fleet retirement is approved.
