May 2nd, 2007 to Now
On May 2, 2007, AMARC was officially redesignated as the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309th AMARG). This renaming was driven by an organizational restructuring within the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). The primary factors included aligning the facility under a numbered maintenance wing to streamline operations, enhance integration with enterprise-wide logistics, and improve efficiency in supporting global warfighter needs.

As missions grew more diverse—handling intercontinental ballistic missiles, satellite components, and rapid aircraft regeneration—the change reflected a shift toward a more agile, high-tech industrial group. It also addressed evolving post-Cold War demands, such as treaty compliance for arms reduction, by centralizing expertise under unified command.The change of command was administrative, involving the deactivation of AMARC as a standalone center and its realignment as a group subordinate to the 309th Maintenance Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah.
This transfer placed AMARG under the Ogden Air Logistics Complex (attached in 2012), ensuring oversight from a specialized maintenance hub without relocating the physical site.
2000s
With an accelerating move to more modern aircraft types, cost reductions for funding new technology and weapon systems, and aviation asset rationalization, the numbers of types retiring in their entirity was a theme during the mid-2020s.
2010s
2020s
- With the gradual introduction of the Boeing KC-46A Pegasus tanker, between late 2020 and 2024 the entire fleet of Douglas KC-10 Extender fleet was retired. The final flight of the type was made by 79-1948 from Travis Air Force Base, CA. to Tucson on September 26th, 2024. Of the 60 that were produced 56 were retired to AMARG.

October 1st, 1985 to May 1st, 2007
A rename from MASDC to Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) occurred on October 1, 1985, marking a significant expansion in scope for the facility. Driving factors for this event included the facility's growing role beyond mere storage and disposition. In the 1980s, amid Cold War tensions, AMARC began handling intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) for dismantling under arms control treaties or repurposing for satellite launches.
This shift reflected broader aerospace responsibilities, including aircraft regeneration for operational reuse, parts reclamation ("cannibalization"), overhaul, refurbishing, conversion to aerial drones, destruction per international agreements like the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty, and storage of production tooling.
The name change from "Military Aircraft" to "Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration" emphasized this new multifaceted mission, aligning with technological advancements and post-Vietnam military needs for efficient resource management. Details on the change of command for the 1985 rename were primarily administrative, with no major personnel re-organization. MASDC operated under the Air Force Logistics Command, and the transition to AMARC maintained this structure without relocating or reassigning the facility.
It remained a direct-reporting unit focused on industrial operations, supporting global readiness by regenerating aircraft for conflicts and other U.S. military operations including Gulf War preparations.

The table below details, in aircraft name order, the numbers of each U.S. Navy aircraft type current at Davis-Monthan AFB at the end of each month during 1965. The numbers for each type are further broken down into the status classifications under which the aircraft were being reported at that particular time. Very often the change of statuses from one classification to another can be seen by the numbers decreasing for one code, and an increasing in another.
These figures only show the aircraft which had not been stricken from the U.S. Navy inventory, therefore the actual numbers may have been higher due to aircraft which were being used for reclamation purposes and/or waiting to be disposed of. However, the numbers give a very good idea of the numbers and movement of U.S. Navy aircraft being transfered to Davis-Monthan for storage.

The table below details, in aircraft name order, the numbers of each U.S. Navy aircraft type current at Davis-Monthan AFB at the end of each month during 1966. The numbers for each type are further broken down into the status classifications under which the aircraft were being reported at that particular time. Very often the change of statuses from one classification to another can be seen by the numbers decreasing for one code, and an increasing in another.
These figures only show the aircraft which had not been stricken from the U.S. Navy inventory, therefore the actual numbers may have been higher due to aircraft which were being used for reclamation purposes and/or waiting to be disposed of. However, the numbers give a very good idea of the numbers and movement of U.S. Navy aircraft being transfered to Davis-Monthan for storage.

Status of Naval Aircraft Inventory
Naval aircraft "inventory" is comprised of all aircraft which have been accepted, but not stricken, by the Navy. An aircraft is accepted when legal custody is assumed by the Navy, and is stricken when officially separated from Naval custody by inclusion on the CNO promulgated listing entitled Separations from the Naval Aircraft Inventory.
Naval aircraft are presented herein under various combinations of three basic classifications: STATUS, CLASS, SUBCLASS and MODEL, and CUSTODY. "Status" refers to the classification of the functional employment condition of the aircraft. The various STATUS codes (situations) by which Navy/Marine air- craft are classified appear in the Status Code Table iK3XZd in this publication Likewise, the table Naval Aircraft Classes, Subclasses and Models illustrate the current system of aircraft classification by CLASS, SUBCLASS and MODEL. Class of aircraft refers to the general mission purpose of aircraft design e.g. fighter, attack, patrol etc.. ,Subclass refers to the next lower level of classification and more specific mission purpose or design e.g. fighter photo, recon etc.. Model refers to a particular type of airframe. Custody refers to the unit (reporting custody) and command (controlling custody) to which the aircrqft has been assigned.

| FUTURE DRONE CONVERSION | Non-program aircraft being held in a storage facility pending conversion to a drone configuration. |
| INACTIVE PROGRAM AIRCRAFT | Program aircraft which are either grounded administratively, stored, or in the process of first delivery (new aircraft) |
| INVENTORY | All naval aircraft which have been accepted into, but not Stricken from the list of Naval Aircraft. Inventory may be divided into Program and Non-Program categories |
| LOCATION | Data are shown by location in tables 6, 7, 8 and 11. Location refers to the physical location, at month end, of the unit having reporting custody of the aircraft. |
| NON-PROGRAM AIRCRAFT | Includes aircraft of experimental or target drone (man-carrying) configuration; those retired (awaiting strike or decision to strike or designated for MAP/FMS) but not yet stricken; aircraft stored with service life complete; and those on bailment or loan contracts. |
| OPERATING AIRCRAFT | This category includes aircraft in operating (A-) status and those awaiting operating status in the physical custody of an operating command (mrB3, 84, B5, B6, 87, BB, BH, BJ, nL. BM). O~erating status aircraft are those in custody of designated units for flight in ,,- performance of H ~av~/Marine mission. "Awaiting operatingn- includes-only those aircraft in the physical and reporting custody of an operating command pending, and intended for, use in oper- ating status. Aircraft in the awaiting operating category do not require rework prior to the assumption of operating (A-) status. |
| OPERATIONAL AIRCRAFT | All aircraft in the controlling custody of the operating commands (COMNAVAIRLANT, COMNAVAIRPAC, CNATRA, CNR/FOR, NAVAIRSYSCOM STF, and NAVAIRSYSCOM RDT&E) i.e., operating and operational pool aircraft. |
| PIPELINE | Includes all aircraft in logistic support of the operating segment of the inventory. The logistic Pipeline includes aircraft Enroute to, Awaiting and In either Standard or Special Rework and those aircraft Awaiting transit or Enroute to operating from Standard or Special Rework. New aircraft in process of first delivery and those in storage are not included in the pipeline category. |
| PROGRAM AIRCRAFT | All production aircraft in the physical custody of the Navy for which current or future operation within an authorized allowance is intended or can reasonably be expected. This includes all aircraft in the naval inventory except aircraft of experimental configuration, target drones (man-carrying), aircraft retired but not yet stricken, aircraft otherwise in process of final disposition, aircraft on bailment or on loan and aircraft stored with no operational service life remaining. |
| REWORK | The restbrative or additive work performed on an aircraft or aircraft equipment by Naval Air- craft Rework Facilities, contractors plants and other industrial establishments designated by competent authority. STANDARD REWORK, comprises one of the processes intended to prepare the aircraft to operate through the next full service tour or period. SPECIAL REWORK entails one of the processes intended to repair, modify or modernize the aircra7t without direct effect on service life (See OPNAVINST 5442.2D) |
